The North Texas Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society is pleased to announce applications are being accepted for the Carter Allan Steers Scholarship now through April 4, 2008. (Click here go to application.)
The Carter Allan Steers Scholarship is open to High School Seniors or College Students majoring in a natural resource related field. (Agriculture, Biology, Soil Conservation, Plant Science, Soils, Economics, etc. studies may qualify for this award). Applicants pursuing Bachelors or Masters Degrees are eligible.
The North Texas Chapter reserves the right to award or not award the scholarship.
The $1,000 scholarship is available to residents of North Texas. SWCS members and/or their immediate family who are or will be attending college are encouraged to apply, but membership is not an application requirement.
Carter Allan Steers' career with the USDA Soil Conservation Service began 1957 as a soil scientist in Woodward, Oklahoma. Over the next 40 years, he served in a variety of positions, including party leader in Oklahoma, soil correlator in Alabama, and assistant head of cartographic services, assistant principal soil correlator, and head information resource management staff for the Southern States.
Carter was a life-long member in SWCS (formerly SCSA), serving on national committees, including the finance committee for the 1993 national SWCS meeting in Fort Worth. He was responsible for many in the Fort Worth area joining and supporting SWCS. Carter truly believed in soil and water conservation and in SWCS. The North Texas Chapter of SWCS hopes to continue his legacy by supporting this scholarship.
The application (attached) deadline is April 4, 2008, and the winner will be awarded at the Spring-Summer North Texas Chapter picnic tentatively scheduled for May 10.
